I'm not alone

I am not alone. I wanted to publicly apologize for the way of thinking and ways I’ve talked about my business—the farm. As a sole-proprietor and someone who is heading up the show it’s easy for me to think I’m the only one involved, after all I pay the taxes, file the book keeping, harvest the vegetables and take the animals to the butcher and advertise the above items in email or facebook form.

But as soon as I start focussing on everything that I’m doing and how it’s a one man show I get a perspective that’s not right. I start focussing on me, how to make me feel better, what those around me are doing or not doing that affect me. 

I don’t want that. That’s not the reality. That’s not what is true, what is right. I’m sorry for thinking and talking about the farm in that way, it’s out of a proud mentality and it’s not what I want to be a part of.


Sure, like any leader or founder I have to have vision, I have to know the end goal, I need to know what it takes to get there, but to think it’s going to happen all by myself, or is happening without all the outside help is a mistake. Let me take a moment and list the ways people have had input or helped in some form or way.

Josiah, you have transformed the weakest manuscripts into the most compelling stories and advertising. Put time, money and energy into cooking and helping at the dinners.

Jo, who has been alongside Josiah and helped in all of the above ways.

Jeremiah, you took 6 weeks of Summer and gave time and energy into learning and helping, thank you for that.

Jermaine. Our second official intern. Your help and work do not go unnoticed, you did hard things and I thank you for that.

Tori, our first intern in our first year. You had the spirit and adventure and willingness to learn and garden. Thanks for being a good friend and intern during the early days of us figuring out what farming is!

Tim and Jenny, who’ve lent land and tools, time, flowers, kitchen space, fridge space, unending wifi and a place to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, hospitality personally and support and just being stable through all things. You are so generous and such big hearts.

Cara and Casey. The generousness of time, of land use, of energy and time around the supper table. Thank you for your willingness to give of yourselves, to push me to bigger and better things, to stand along side and be a part of it all.

Jether, who helped get things started and continues to put time and energy and even money into the land and farm when he’s around. Thanks for you support and love of me personally.

Jojo, thanks for your time and the video and photos you made, they are a huge help in the website startup.

Joel, thank you for being there to question my motives, for criticizing me as only a deep friend would. Thanks for being willing to tell me when I’m doing something wrong and doing too much, and when I can improve. Your friendship means so much to me, thank you!

My family, thanks for buying the frozen chickens and farm fresh eggs, the pork and being willing to add those items into your food budget. Your support is emotional and also physical. Thanks for the texts, the emails, the visits, I wouldn’t be here without you all.

Brent, thanks for being the first person to start selling our eggs wholesale, and put in a word for us to start selling at Easy Bistro! 

Sara, thanks for being an awesome manager at Niedlovs and so willing to interact and take time to talk about farming and our products. Thanks for buying our eggs!

Padgett, your friendship has only been a little over a year, but it has grown a lot since then. Your support is so essential, the way you show up at our dinners, advertise for us, talk to your friends about the farm, we wouldn’t be doing what we’re doing without you help!

Our CSA customers, thank you for being willing to take risk. To signup for vegetables when you probably didn’t need that 16th eggplant, or another darned bag of peppers! Thanks for the support!

Our Farm to Table customers, thank you for the time you took, the money you spent,  and willingness to participate in local food—particularly a local farm. You are the backbone of these dinners and we couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you to Jill for the side work you gave me personally and the friendship and support you have given us. For being there, wanting to be in on what’s going on and being a local farmer friend!

I’m sure I’ve missed someone, I’m sure I’ve missed lots of people. It’s the guy at the counter with a cold brew on a sweltering August afternoon. The smile of that person when I walked down the street thinking about how could I possibly pay the bills. The text from that person saying you were praying for me. The ‘Hi’ as I came in the back with an egg delivery. The email with suggestions of how to cook the roast beef and do a béchamel sauce. The sharing of our event on facebook, the reaching out, saying hi, being inquisitive about what we’re up to, or products we sell. Thank you.


I’ve been thinking about writing this blogpost for a few weeks now, been mulling it over and deciding on what I want to say. No man is alone, we’re not an island. No farm is a lone ranger operation. It’s everybody involved. It’s a community effort. Do I manage the farm, did I start it? Yes. But that’s not the focus point and that’s not what I want to look at as a whole. I want to impact others, see what they are doing to impart or give input into the business. I want to sit down and have a conversation with you, hear your life story and be your friend. I don’t want to be alone in this and I want to include you!
